For more than 20 years, Maggie the elephant has lived in the Alaska Zoo. Born wild in Africa, she now lives alone in captivity, spending half the year in a small unnatural enclosure because of the cold, dark, inhospitable Alaskan winters.
In the wild, elephants roam for miles everyday, browsing for food. They live and travel in family groups led by a matriarch. Like humans, they are social animals who form bonds that can last a lifetime. Hundreds of captive elephants are scattered across America; they deserve better. Born Free USA wants to help raise the funds necessary to provide for their lifetime care, if we can get Maggie or others moved to one of America’s fine elephant sanctuaries. Please help free Maggie.
